Behavioural Assessments provide vital insights into an individual’s current abilities and the factors influencing their behaviour. They help identify strengths, challenges, and learning preferences, forming the foundation for tailored ABA programs and Behaviour Support Plans.
Evaluating Skill Levels
We begin by assessing areas such as communication, social skills, adaptive behaviour, and academics. This establishes a clear baseline and highlights where support is needed. Understanding both strengths and areas for growth guides skill development and ensures interventions are targeted and relevant.
Understanding Behaviour
Assessments also explore the reasons behind specific behaviours. The Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA) examines:
- Antecedents – What triggers the behaviour?
- Behaviour – What is happening, and how often, how long and how intense?
- Consequences – What happens after the behaviour?
This helps identify whether behaviours are reinforced and clarifies their function (e.g., seeking attention or avoiding tasks). Addressing root causes, not just symptoms, allows for more effective, personalised strategies.
Informing Interventions
Assessment data shapes ABA programs and Behaviour Support Plans by targeting key areas. For example, if a child uses behaviour to avoid tasks, we may teach coping strategies or adapt the task or environment. If communication is a challenge, teaching language skills becomes a focus. Assessments guide our choice of interventions, from reinforcement strategies to teaching new skills.
Ongoing Review
Assessments are continuous. We track progress, adjust interventions as needed, and ensure our approach evolves with the individual. This keeps support effective and responsive over time.
